Depok, Indonesia – 17 September 2024 – Universitas Islam Internasional Indonesia (UIII) welcomed its new cohort of students for the 2024-2025 academic year during a grand convocation ceremony, showcasing the university’s growing global appeal. This year, UIII received applications from 78 countries, marking a significant rise in international interest. From this diverse pool, 244 students from 28 countries were admitted.

“This is a special day, marking the beginning of your journey with us,” said UIII’s Rector, Prof. Dr. Jamhari, MA, as he addressed the incoming class. “You are now part of a global community dedicated to academic excellence, intellectual growth, and ethical leadership.”

The incoming students were selected from a competitive pool and will join the university’s faculties of Islamic Studies, Social Sciences, Economics and Business, and Education. The breakdown of admissions includes: (1) Faculty of Islamic Studies: 70 students, specializing in areas such as Islamic Studies, Classical Islam, and Doctoral research in Islamic Studies. (2) Faculty of Social Sciences: 71 students, with specializations in Political Science, Climate Change, and Doctoral studies. (3) Faculty of Economics and Business: 66 students, including those focused on Economics and Sustainable Finance. (4) Faculty of Education: 37 students, with studies spanning across Master’s and Doctoral programs.

A Vision Beyond Academia

In his speech, Prof. Jamhari emphasized UIII’s foundational purpose, highlighting its role in enhancing Indonesia’s academic and cultural standing on the world stage. UIII is closely aligned with Indonesia’s vision to bolster global leadership, particularly through promoting Wasathiyah Islam—a moderate, inclusive, and peaceful interpretation of Islam that reflects Indonesia’s core values.

“UIII was established to fill a gap in global academia. While Indonesia is the largest Muslim-majority country, it has yet to receive recognition on par with institutions like Al-Azhar or top universities in the Middle East,” Prof. Jamhari remarked. “Our goal is to provide world-class education and research, positioning Indonesia as a leading hub for graduate studies in the Muslim world.”

International Collaborations

UIII’s ambitious growth strategy includes strong international partnerships, which Prof. Jamhari highlighted during his address. Key collaborations with prestigious institutions like The University of Edinburgh, SOAS University of London, and Deakin University have led to dual-degree programs, allowing students to earn degrees from both UIII and partner universities.

“These partnerships are not just about academic excellence; they are about expanding horizons, providing students with the tools to engage with global challenges, and offering opportunities for meaningful cross-cultural exchanges,” said Prof. Jamhari.

Vice Rector for Academic and Student Affairs, Dr. Phil. Syafiq Hasyim, also extended a warm welcome to the new students, emphasizing the significance of joining UIII’s diverse academic community, “It’s an honor to stand before you as we celebrate this momentous occasion—the beginning of your academic journey with us.”

Dr. Syafiq Hasyim noted that there are currently active students from Indonesia and 33 other countries, reinforcing UIII’s commitment to academic excellence and global engagement. “We proudly welcome new students into our Master’s and Doctoral programs across various fields of study, strengthening our mission to foster global collaboration and thought leadership,” he added.

Looking Ahead   As UIII continues its mission to become a transformative educational institution, Prof. Jamhari encouraged students to embrace the university’s values of moderation, peace, and inclusivity, and to contribute to global discussions on critical issues.

“UIII is more than just a university—it is a vision of what education can be in a rapidly changing world. By embracing these principles, you are contributing to a brighter future, not just for Indonesia, but for the world,” he concluded.

The 2024 Convocation Ceremony, also broadcast live through UIII YouTube channel, marks another key milestone as UIII continues to build its reputation as a leading institution for global education and research.
