In collaboration with one of ASEAN’s leading banking groups, CIMB Niaga, the Faculty of Economics and Business at UIII hosted a thought-provoking Biztalk session on Tuesday, October 8, 2024. The discussion focused on the digital transformation of the Islamic banking sector and featured Mr. Muhammad Sadiq, Senior Vice President of CIMB Niaga.
Held at the Lecture Hall of Faculty B, the event, titled “Smart Digitalization in Islamic Banking,” explored how digital solutions are enhancing financial service access, particularly for individuals and businesses in remote regions of Indonesia. The session highlighted the role of mobile banking, digital wallets, and online lending platforms in boosting accessibility, reducing costs, and generating savings for the industry.
In his presentation, Mr. Sadiq emphasized that while digital strategies in Islamic and conventional banking are similar, Islamic banking maintains a strict focus on Sharia compliance. “The digital strategies applied in conventional banks are also implemented in Islamic banking, but we prioritize aspects related to Sharia, such as investment rates and ensuring transactions comply with justice and halal principles,” he explained.
Mr. Sadiq also highlighted key distinctions between Islamic and conventional banking, noting that Islamic banks operate under Sharia law with a focus on ethical finance, targeting specific customer segments. CIMB Niaga’s Islamic banking services are designed to uphold these values, ensuring all financial activities align with Sharia principles while promoting sustainable and ethical practices.
He concluded by underscoring the transformative potential of smart digitalization in shifting customer mindsets, benefiting not only individual clients but also future merchants. Mr. Sadiq stressed that embracing digital solutions that align with Islamic principles is essential for expanding and modernizing the industry.
